Blind Spots

Have you ever experienced driving a car and signalling to change lanes, only to be alarmed by a honking hooter from the car in the next lane you did not see because it was in your car's 'blind spot'?

Not paying attention to what is in the bind spot could cause accidents and all sorts of harm, both while driving a car and while navigating your way through life.

What do I mean by a blind spot?

It is those emotions, attitudes, behaviours, personality traits or habits we have that we are either not aware of nor are we properly acknowledging them. This could be because of denial, embarrassment, suppressed emotions, or simple ignorance driven by our ego hiding it from us.

It could also be something we are holding on to, keeping to ourselves instead of confessing and surrendering it to God.

Please know that most of us suffer with blind spots - we most likely are not aware of them, and nobody can convince us of them either - that is why it is a bind spot (we are blinded to its existence).

An example of a blind spot I have suffered with includes finding that people regularly disappoint or frustrate me because they do not do things the way I feel they should be done or to the standards I feel should be the norm. This is my ego and arrogance deciding that my standard is the benchmark that everybody else should live up to. I say that we should all compare, criticise and complain less, but then I find myself criticising people for not doing things according to my standards - you could say this is hypocritical, but I say it is also a blind spot in not identifying, naming, owning (taking responsibility for) and controlling or addressing/conquering/overcoming it.

Some say that identifying some fault in others is merely reflecting or projecting onto others what is in yourself that you simply do not want to admit - a blind spot.

Matthew 7:3-5 advises "first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Scripture also advises that we can ask (pray) for wisdom and discernment, and God will freely give it to us.

Need I say any more?

May God bless you abundantly.
